Woods Chapel United Methodist Church in Odessa sponsored its first annual Smokin’ with Woods Charity Barbeque Contest at the Country Gardens RV Park this past weekend. It was proclaimed a Missouri State Championship contest by Governor Jay Nixon with the grand champion receiving an invitation to the American Royal World Series of Barbeque Invitational and a draw entry for the Jack Daniels World Championship BBQ Invitational.

The contest was sanctioned by The Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) which is coordinating a national BBQ donation effort to cook and distribute more than 100,000 meals throughout America over the next year. KCBS sanctions over 400 barbeque contests throughout the United States and spanning the globe.

Smokin’ with Woods organized by Woods Chapel United Methodist Church participated in the 100,000 KCBS Meals Mission by collecting non-perishable food contributions for the hungry. By using the volunteers and the 28 cook teams, the contest also provided 32 fully cooked, world-class pork butts to Woods Chapel’s Adam’s Rib Ministry. The 32 pork butts resulted in 800 servings of pulled pork. The non-perishable food items collected were given to the Odessa Community Services Food Pantry.

The Adam’s Rib Ministry was created to help fill a critical need for fresh and/or prepared meat protein to food pantries, food kitchens and natural disaster situations. Harvester’s, Hillcrest Ministry (transitional housing) and local food pantries are typical recipients. Individuals around Woods Chapel UMC Odessa are also potential recipients on a year-round basis.
