Greg DeCamp came to North Star UMC in Liberty through a small group. He and his wife had a baby and a toddler, and friends invited them to a parenting small group. They really enjoyed it, and after participating for a while, they decided to take their relationship with the church further and start attending worship.
At that time North Star UMC was a new church start that was meeting at Shoal Creek Elementary. Soon they were helping set up and tear down the “church in a box” at the school on Sundays. “We enjoyed the people, the message and the culture of the church,” DeCamp said.
Though the small group drew them in, it didn’t hurt any that the church was United Methodist. DeCamp grew up in Schweitzer UMC in Springfield, where he was active in choirs and as a puppeteer. And his faith grew at Camp Galilee, the same United Methodist camp where he has now sent his children to camp.
DeCamp is an independent financial advisor and insurance broker. Part of his ministry at North Star UMC is teaching the popular Financial Peace University class by Dave Ramsey. And he’s still taking part in a parenting small group with his wife, but now it’s “Not Your Momma’s Parenting Group,” focused on issues faced by parents raising teenagers.
