Pop Culture Parables: Inviting New People through Story

Everyone has a story. Sometimes we tell our story through art, movies, comic books, music, drama or the written word. Baby boomers offered the world ground shaking music and novels that challenged the status quo. Millennials are telling their story through a digital invasion of sharing information that no wall is too powerful to contain. Sometimes it seems that ages, nations and races are worlds apart, but what if these stories are closer together than they seem. God is telling a story, too.

The Holy Spirit has an amazing way of revealing truth in whatever medium anyone is brave enough to try. Whether the truth is veiled in flesh or chords or brush strokes or language, if we are willing to listen to the parables in pop culture, we just might find that God is always trying to bring us together.

Matt Rawle is the Lead Pastor of Asbury UMC in Bossier City, Louisiana and author of the Pop in Culture series designed to invite those outside the church in through weaving music and media into preaching. Rawle is an international speaker who loves to tell an old story in a new way, especially at the intersection of pop culture and the church. The Pop in Culture Series of worship and study resources includes The Faith of a Mockingbird, Hollywood Jesus, and The Salvation of Doctor Who.
