It’s been said, “Romantic visions of courage and heroism are the stuff from which novels are constructed, but the reality of courage and heroism to a firefighter is hard, dirty work.”  The same can be said for the courage and heroism required of the Christian (laity or clergy) to go out and make disciples and help to rescue the perishing in a different context.  It will often require hard, dirty work to build relationships with people who need to hear God’s message of love and redemption for them.  It becomes easy to give in to our human nature to pull back in fear or anxiety or frustration, to fall back into indifference when it comes to the spiritual state of others, to pour out condemnation on those with different life experiences than our own.  “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses (Acts 1:8).”
