Nursing with Faith

A faith community nurse in your congregation is a member of your church who is willing to share his or her nursing expertise and Christian faith with you. This role is relatively new for the United Methodist Church and the Mark Twain District. As a result of a grant, the district was able to sponsor a faith community nurse program. With the support of the churches in the area, participants were able to learn and have refreshments with no charge. The three workshop days were held at Faith United Methodist in Kirksville.On October 1, the group celebrated the commissioning of eleven new faith community nurses with an inspiring service. The service included inspirational messages from participants and an anointing of hands.
After completing the faith community nurse training, these nurses have committed themselves to a ministry that involves working closely with church members to maintain the health of their bodies, mind and spirit. This role includes activities such as health screenings, educational presentations, nurture and support during times of grief or emotional crisis, and most importantly spiritual care. Throughout the training, these nurses shared their own experiences in spiritual growth and became acquainted with each other. Together they will be providing a new and exciting ministry for congregations in the Mark Twain District.
