As the sun set, I dropped to my knees and reached into my camera bag. Looking up, this image took my breath away. Framing the image in my viewfinder, my mind jolted back to the fresh excitement from when I was a kid in Tarkio, Missouri, holding my first SLR camera up to my eye.

My dad died when I was twelve, and at age thirteen I was working 40-hour weeks as a janitor to help the family cope. But I did save up for that first SLR, and photography became a love affair. Recently I photographed some compositionally and technically solid images which bored me, and that bothered me until I began to understand why.

As a youth, it was a labor of love to painstakingly shoot a precious roll of film and then wait for it to return from the lab. In this digital age, it has become easy to take many pictures and not be passionate about any of them. This cotton field reminded me of how I first loved.
