Youth Director/NextGen Coordinator - Missouri UMC (Columbia)


Job Summary: Youth Ministry Director is a full-time ministry position and will restart the Youth Program at MUM-C from the ground up. To engage and reengage students in our church community and to bring new students into our community. They will run weekly programing and special events as they build a leadership team and a pool of intergenerational volunteers. The Director will ensure that weekly Sunday School and Youth Group is a consistent, safe and vibrant learning environment. Director will plan and execute a concentrated youth service opportunity (such as a mission trip). Director will (with pastoral support) offer yearly/bi-yearly confirmation program. They will be responsible to communicate needs and opportunities with all of the stakeholder (students, parents, staff and church community). This director will be attentive to the yearly curricular goals and the seven-year curricular scope that students experience if involved during their whole time as youth in the church.

This applicant will also serve as the Next Generations Coordinator that is responsible for holding the full scope of ministry for Missouri United Methodist Church from birth into adulthood (nursery to college). The coordinator will partner with children’s director, youth director and college ministry director as appropriate to their skills and experience. Depending on the experience of the individual ministry directors, the coordinator will manage, coach, train, support and mentor. The coordinator will design and maintain strategies and curriculum that will work to connect the next generation with Jesus Christ by (1) welcomes enthusiastically (2) growing deeply and (3) serving courageously. The coordinator will be support all NextGen Directors to develop and maintain a vibrant pool of volunteers to serve as leaders and in ministry. The coordinator will develop a wholistic curricular approach that will incorporate teaching in biblical knowledge, practical growth and theological breadth as appropriate for different ages and stages of development.

Responsibilities and expectations

  • Responsible for re-starting a youth ministry from the ground up
  • Connecting and incorporating new and existing families and youth into the program
  • Run Sunday School, Youth Group, Confirmation, and Service Opportunity Coordinate (mentor/coach/partner with) directors of children and college ministry and preschool directors
  • Collaborate with Staff for all-church events and experiences
  • Nurture a vibrant faith and personal relationship with Jesus Christ
Qualifications and Education Requirements
  • A desire to serve God through effective ministry leadership
  • United Methodist theological understanding and/or training
  • Master of Divinity or equivalent preferred
  • Experience in leading youth in a United Methodist Congregation or equivalent
Preferred Skills
  • Experience growing a ministry from the ground up
  • Experience in developing and maintaining volunteers
  • Experience leading leaders
  • Preaching on occasion in desired
Additional Notes: Reports to the pastoral team and works administratively with the office manager. By the time of hiring, each candidate must be Safe Gatherings Certified by the Missouri Conference, including a criminal background check and training for safety of children ages 1-18 and vulnerable adults.
