Part-Time Director of Music - Missouri UMC (Columbia)

Missouri United Methodist Church – a flagship United Methodist Church in the heart of Columbia, Missouri – is searching for the right candidate to build upon the rich musical heritage of its church and congregation. Music is an integral and celebrated part of worship at MUMC, and we seek to further enrich the worship experience through growth of the choral program and implementation of new musical opportunities. This position is currently scoped for half-time (20 hours per week) with the potential of increasing the hours and responsibilities to three-quarters time in the future.
 

Functional Capabilities:

  • Schedule and lead weekly rehearsals for Chancel Choir (11:00 Sanctuary worship service) and City Singers (9:30 Contemporary worship service) along with special services throughout the year
  • Select appropriate choral anthems, songs, choruses, etc. from the church music library and by purchasing new sheet music to enhance worship services; verify appropriate licensing for usage
  • Maintain current reporting to all licensing accounts (CCLI, OneLicense, CCS) as required by copyright law
  • Meet regularly with pastoral staff, organist, and other worship leaders to plan themes, liturgies, special music, and to collaborate in providing and promoting excellence in worship
  • Recruit volunteer singers and musicians and recruit and manage paid student singers and musicians to participate in music and worship ministry
  • Work collaboratively and coordinate with other arts entities within the church: Arts in Worship; Handbell Ensemble; MUMC Concert Series et al
  • Attend and participate in regular music and worship committee meetings and other group meetings as needed
  • Develop relationships with area colleges and universities, community choral and instrumental groups, public and private school music teachers, etc. for invitations to participate in worship and church activities and for recruitment opportunities
  • Develop and nurture welcoming relationships with choir members, musicians, church staff, and congregational members
  • Work with children and youth to identify and help develop musical gifts and opportunities to share talents with others
  • Seek out opportunities for continuing education and professional development

Expectations:

  • Excellence in choral conducting and rehearsal skill; firm knowledge of healthy vocal production and technique
  • Outstanding communication and organizational skills; attention to detail
  • Extensive knowledge of sacred choral repertory

  • Planning of, and operation within, annual music department budget
  • Firm understanding of the importance of relationship-building and public relations both inside and outside the walls of the church

Qualifications

  • Extensive musical training with experience leading a large choir
  • High School Graduate, B.A. or B.F.A., Master’s Degree preferred
  • Professionally trained and skilled
  • Must have a passion and love for Christ; familiarity with United Methodism helpful
