The United Methodist Church is a church organized around connection. Local churches and clergy are connected to each other in relationship and ministry through the work of conferences. Conferences are regional areas with boundaries that are served by a bishop. United Methodists believe and practice that we are better together. Within the conference, local churches and clergy are connected and resourced for the work of ministry in their context. The boundary of the Missouri Conference is the state of Missouri. We are made up of nearly 700 local churches of various sizes in almost every county in the state. Ministry contexts vary from rural to urban.

The mission of the Missouri Conference is to relentlessly lead our churches to become outwardly focused and spiritually centered Christ followers. We desire to be a brave, empowering place for people from diverse cultures and generations so that we can become a Church for all God’s people. We seek to do this by equipping Conference leaders and local churches for multicultural leadership, cross-cultural connection and healing justice. The Missouri Conference has six expectations of all clergy and lay members: Christ-centeredness, accountability, collaboration, excellence, diversity and fruitfulness. These values are central to our pursuit of Unity in Christ through Diversity in the Kingdom.

Position Description

The Missouri Conference of the United Methodist Church seeks a leader (either lay person or clergy) for the full-time position of Leadership Recruiter. The recruiter will work with the Episcopal Office and Conference directors, especially within the Centers for Leadership Excellence and Congregational Excellence, to develop and implement a plan to increase the number and efficacy of clergy within the Annual Conference. This work will particularly consider Conference leadership’s desire to increase the number of younger and more diverse clergy appointed to serve the Conference’s local churches. This position may be fulfilled by laity or clergy.

The qualified candidate will possess a strong passion for the ministry of the gospel of Jesus and for identifying and investing in the next generation of younger and more diverse leaders for the Church. They will also have the following professional skills:
  • Visionary: ability to envision and implement creative ministry solutions
  • Strategist: thinks strategically about goals, outcomes and best practices
  • Relationship Builder: connects with ministry partners like undergraduate and graduate institutions, parachurch, non-profit and secular organizations, local church ministry staff and volunteers, team members, staff, vendors and Conference personnel in an authentic way
  • Effective Communicator: communicates effectively in a way that is consistent with the vision and values and goals of the Missouri Conference; willingness to teach and train and effective speaking at public learning events and meetings
  • Developer: effectively identifies gifts and talents in other and helps connect their passion and interests to the needs of the mission field
  • Organizational Manager: coordinates ministry within the larger Conference system that includes other programmatic agendas
  • Learner: demonstrates a desire for life-long professional learning and personal growth as a disciple of Christ

Responsibilities of the Position

  • Work with the Episcopal Office and Centers for Leadership Excellence and Congregational Excellence to develop and implement a comprehensive plan for recruiting gifted leaders to the mission field within the Missouri Conference.
  • Develop relationships with United Methodist-related institutions such as University Senate-approved seminaries, United Methodist-related colleges and universities, and non-Methodist-related Historically Black Colleges and Universities to share the vision of Missouri Conference to connect with like-minded leaders interested in moving to Missouri for the purpose of ministry.
  • Work with supervisor to develop goals that are aligned with the mission and values of the Missouri Conference.
  • Collaborate with directors and other Conference staff to serve the mission of the Missouri Conference, including Conference-wide priorities and initiatives like the work on race and culture

Minimum Education Requirements

  • Knowledge of foundational biblical stories and Christian principles is required.
  • A degree or work toward a degree in any field related to communicating and connecting with others is preferred.

 Desired Experience

  • Professional or extensive volunteer experience working with identifying, recruiting or developing talent in others is required. Ministry experience is preferred. Experience leading others in fruitful ministry is highly desired. The applicant must be able to demonstrate ways that they lead a life of active faith in Jesus Christ.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Residence in or near Columbia, Missouri is required.
  • Travel expected within Missouri and throughout the United States for the purpose of recruitment. Some weekend responsibilities are required.
  • Functionality with Microsoft Office software is necessary.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary range, depending upon experience, is $75,000-80,000 (including housing for clergy).
  • 403(b) with 12% employer contribution, group health (dental and vision) insurance with no waiting period and employer contribution sufficient to purchase basic individual coverage at no cost to the employee and paid time off.
  • Travel expenses will be reimbursed per the Conference reimbursement policy outlined in the Employee Handbook.
