Full-Charge Bookkeeper - Missouri UMC (Columbia)


Reports To: The Full-Charge Bookkeeper will report to the Senior Pastor.

Job Overview: The Full-Charge Bookkeeper will be responsible for managing and accounting for the financial resources of the Church. This position will, in close collaboration with the Senior Pastor and the Finance Team, process, account for, and periodically report on all financial activities of the Church. This position will also lead the process of creating the annual budget for submission to the Lead Team for final approval and will monitor financial performance against budget throughout the year.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Maintain member giving, reconcile gifts to the general ledger, and periodically provide giving statements to members
  • Process and deposit other Accounts Receivable payments
  • Facilitate annual pledge drive and enter pledges into financial system
  • Prepare bank deposits, both remote and manual, and ensure deposits are properly made with the bank
  • Maintain vendor records, process payment requests, monitor adherence to payment policies and procedures, reconcile accounts payable to the general ledger
  • Prepare journal entries as needed
  • Monitor and account for investment funds
  • Maintain accuracy and integrity of financial data in the general ledger through periodic review and regular reconciliation
  • Under direction of the Finance Team and Senior Pastor, prepare annual budget and provide regular budget performance reports to area managers, Finance Team, Senior Pastor, and Lead Team
  • Administer and oversee the automated, double-entry, accrual, fund accounting system
  • Work closely with the Trustees Team to ensure that spending is appropriate and within budgetary restrictions
  • Maintain and process bi-weekly payroll using third party payroll system, ensuring accuracy and compliance with policies
  • Distribute year-end tax reporting statements to employees and independent contractors
  • Manage benefit enrollments and entry of new employees into payroll and benefits systems
  • Prepare and monitor internal controls and financial policies
  • Prepare year end accruals and reports needed for the annual financial review/audit
  • Serve as liaison to outside audit firm
  • Serve as an available resource to groups within the church that require financial management and reporting
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or equivalent education/work experience combination to ensure thorough knowledge of and ability to perform duties in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles
  • Minimum of five years accounting experience with at least three of those years in a full-charge role
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to interact with a wide variety of individuals (church members, committee members, clergy, staff with diverse job skills and duties)
  • Ability to work independently without significant supervision and self-regulate work requirements, consistently meeting established deadlines
