Tsalala Training Center and primary school is a ministry of the Women's Society of the UMC in Mozambique, situated in Maputo province 14 km away from the city center.
There are 283 children enrolled at the school and they offer classes for grades 1–5 with four teachers, one Director, one guard and one custodian. The women's society visits the school and on occasion they meet with teachers and parents once per month to discuss the children's education. To help prevent sickness like malaria, tuberculosis, HIV and AIDS the public health arm of the Women's Society teaching the children personal hygiene.
Literacy classes and adult education is held in the afternoon, while we also have sewing lessons for the same women and girls. Sewing and cooking skills are emphasized to help prevent illness. We have two sewing machines and some material, but it is not enough. The students do not have a way or the means to buy material, and the Women's Society steps in when possible.
Challenges arise and there are a number of children who drop out of school for various reasons, but even with the difficulties we see potential for the school. The local parish has established a class for Bible study and a prayer group, so the children and community of Tsalala can learn about Jesus Christ.
