2011 School of Lay Ministry
July 22-24, CMU, Fayette, MO
Lay Speaking Ministries: Equipping Laity United Methodists for all Facets of Lay Ministry

School of Lay Ministry is a weekend training event for laity and lay speakers in the Missouri Conference.  It serves as an Advanced Course for lay speakers but its purpose is to equip all laity who choose to attend.  This years theme is "Lay Speakers Lead Laity on the Pathway to Discipleship."  The purpose is to equip lay speakers and key laity to work with their pastors in developing an intentional, visible pathway to discipleship, then to participate through preparing, leading and teaching the course work within their congregations.  We encourage lay speakers and pastors to meet prior to the course to set expectations and then to meet again following the course to apply the course work to their local environment.

The recommended text is Simple Church (Rainer and Geiger.  2006, B&H Publishing) that puts forward that a church's vision and process of discipleship should be the same.  In its simplest form, the vision/process is connecting to (loving) God, connecting to (loving) others, connecting to (loving or serving) the world.  There are but a handful of churches in the conference that have successfully implemented and are intentional in the process, but what they are doing to extraordinary.  We want to build on their success and transfer that knowledge to as wide a base as possible.

The course will use Conference speakers and resources as well as those from Church of the Resurrection (Kansas), Ginghamsburg (Ohio) and others.  The intention is to provide a example process and a menu of courses and programs that can be tailored to local use.  The school will include integrated planning with the final product being a plan that can be discussed with the pastor upon return.  An emphasis will be placed on adapting the pathways to small and medium sized churches.
